Protection from serious head injury was poor for the driver in both crash tests and poor for the passenger in the full frontal crash test. The passenger compartment held its shape well, except there was substantial movement of the dash and brake pedal in the offset crash test.
A driver's air bag is optional. Neither test vehicle had an air bag.
Corollas built since January 1996 have the same body shape but changes to the structure, seat belts and steering wheel should improve safety performance.
The front seat belts have height-adjustable upper anchorages and the seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats. These features improve the fit of the seat belt.
The driver's head hit the steering wheel with a severe impact and protection from serious head injury was poor. The passenger's head hit the dash with a severe impact and protection from serious head injury was also poor.
The driver's knees hit the dash and dash support. The passenger's knees hit the glove box.
Offset Crash Test (60km/h)
The driver's head hit the steering wheel with a severe impact and protection from serious head injury was poor. The steering wheel rotated to the right causing the driver's head to swing to the right during rebound. The driver's head then hit the edge of the head restraint and made light contact with the centre pillar.
The passenger's head hit the dash with a severe impact and protection from serious head injury was marginal. The driver's knees hit the dash. The passenger's knees hit the glove box and dash.
The passenger compartment held its shape well in the full frontal crash test. All doors remained closed during the crash and could be easily opened after the crash.
Offset Crash Test (60 km/h)
The passenger compartment held its shape reasonably well in the offset crash test. The front part of the driver's floor space was pushed rearwards 8cm but the brake pedal moved back a substantial 27cm. The dash was pushed 15cm towards the driver. The roof was buckled upwards above the driver and the front pillar was bent. The width of the driver's doorway shortened by 8cm.
All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash moderate effort was required to open the rear door on the driver's side and this door needed to be opened before the driver's door could be opened. The doors on the passenger's side could be easily opened.
