ANCAP crash test results

Nissan Navara 4x4 | 2008 on

Dual front airbags*

* Safety equipment, as tested, not standard on all variants

Occupant protection score: 22.88 out of 37

Important note: The European model with dual airbags and seat belt pretensioners was tested by Euro NCAP. Australasian specifications may vary and therefore models sold in Australasia might provide different levels of protection to those described on this page.

Model history and safety features

The tested model of Nissan Navara (D40) was introduced in Australia during 2005. An enhancement to the airbag software was introduced late in 2007 and this rating applies to airbag-equipped vehicles with this enhancement. Nissan Australia is conducting a related service campaign for earlier vehicles.

Dual front airbags and seat belt pretensioners (as fitted to the tested vehicle) are optional on the 4x4 RX and standard on other variants. Occupant protection can be expected to be worse without these features. Antilock brakes (ABS) with brake assist are also optional on the 4x4 RX and standard on other variants.

Three point seat belts are fitted to all seats. These provide better protection than a two point (lap) seat belts.

Occupant protection: starstarstar

The Nissan Navara scored 6.88 out of 16 in the offset crash test. The integrity of the passenger compartment was compromised. Protection from serious chest and leg injury was weak for the driver.

The vehicle scored 16 out of 16 in the side impact crash test.

Diagram showing severity of injury for vehicle occupants.

Frontal offset crash test

Body region scores out of 4 points each: Head/neck 4 pts, chest 1.32 pts, upper legs 1.56 pts, lower legs zero pts.

The integrity of the passenger compartment was compromised in the offset crash test. The clutch pedal moved rearwards by 177 mm and upwards 46 mm. The footwell ruptured. The steering wheel hub moved 52 mm rearward, 44 mm upward and 43mm sideways. The front ("A") pillar moved 63 mm rearwards. All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash the driver's door could be opened with normal effort.

The airbag cushioned the head of the driver and contact was stable. Dash components were a potential source of injury for the driver and passenger knees. The passenger's head was cushioned by the airbag.

Side impact crash test

Body region scores out of 4 points each: Head 4 pts, chest 4 pts, abdomen 4 pts, pelvis 4 pts.

The side impact test simulates a small car striking the driver's door of the vehicle under test. It is based on a regulation test but the regulation does not apply to vehicles with a high seat height like the Navara. Experience shows that such vehicles can be expected to perform well in this test and the Navara scored full marks.

Pedestrian protection rating: starstar

The part of the bonnet surface most likely to be hit by an adult's head was rated predominantly fair for the protection it offered. All other areas - bonnet surface likely to hit by a child's head, the front edge of the bonnet and the bumper - were rated as predominantly poor.

Child head impacts 4.50
Adult head impacts 7.71
Upper leg impacts Zero
Lower leg impacts 2
Total (out of 36) 14.21
