The passenger compartment was substantially deformed in the offset crash test and protection from serious head injury for both the driver and passenger was poor.
Protection from serious head injury was also poor for both the driver and passenger in the full frontal crash test.
Air bags are not available.
The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats. This feature improves the fit of the seat belt.
Mazda 121s built since January 1996 have the same body shape but changes to the structure, seat belts and steering wheel should improve safety performance.
The driver's head hit the steering wheel with a severe impact. Protection from serious head injury was poor. The passenger's head hit its knees and the dash with a severe impact. The knees were forced upwards by the floor deformation.
Protection from serious head injury was also poor for the passenger. The driver's knees hit the dash and steering column. The passenger's knees hit the glove box.
The driver's head hit the steering wheel with a severe impact and protection from serious head injury was poor. During rebound the driver's head moved to the right and swung near to the open side window.

All doors remained closed during the crash. All doors could be easily opened after the crash but the rear doors had to be opened before the front doors could be opened.
The passenger compartment was substantially deformed in the offset crash test. The front part of the driver's floor was pushed rearwards 10cm and was severely deformed. The dash was pushed more than 12cm towards the driver.
The roof was severely buckled above the driver and the front pillar was bent. The right-hand front road wheel was pushed back to about half-way along the driver's door. The width of the driver's doorway shortened by a substantial 21cm and the door buckled outwards at the front.
All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash tools were required to open the driver's door. All other doors could be easily opened.
