Domestic sea freight

The Sea change: Transforming coastal shipping in New Zealand strategy launched in May 2008, recognises that coastal shipping is an important part of an integrated transport network.

Demand for road transport has been increasing faster than the growth in population. This has put New Zealand’s roads under increased pressure. It is anticipated that total freight movements on the transport system will more than double by 2040. To meet this growing freight demand, investment in alternative transport modes is necessary.

Domestic sea freight development fund

The NZ Transport Agency has allocated around $2 million in the 2008/2009 domestic sea freight development funding round (see table below).

Further funding

The Government Policy Statement on Land Transport Funding 2009/10 – 2018/19 (GPS) was reviewed and updated in May 2009 to reflect the government’s transport priorities for national economic growth and productivity, and efficient transport investment. The May 2009 GPS provided a target range for Domestic sea freight funding to cover for existing commitments only. Consequently, there will not be any further Domestic Sea Freight funding rounds during the 2009/10 to 2011/12 period.
