Where to walk when you're beside the road

Footpaths provide a safe place for you to walk. When a footpath is provided, use it.

When there is no footpath, do the following:

  • Walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic - except on curves, where it is best to walk on the outside edge of the curve.
  • If possible, walk off the road or as close to the edge of the road as you can.
  • At night, wear light-coloured clothing or carry something white - a sheet of newspaper is better than nothing, and a torch or reflective belt or arm band is better still.
