INFOSHEET 1.67 — Importing motor vehicles into New Zealand

17 December 2008 Revision 13 This revision reminds importers about the Vehicle Exhaust Emissions Rule requirements that came into force on 3 January 2008, as well as the situation for vehicles that were border-checked for entry into New Zealand before 1 February 2008, and have not been entry-certified.
8 May 2008 Revision 12 This revision advises importers about the changed rules for importing immigrants’ vehicles of Classes MA, MB or MC; or ‘special interest vehicles’, that do not meet frontal impact or emissions standards.
29 November 2007 Revision 11 This revision to the infosheet advises you that new vehicle exhaust emissions standards requirements are expected to come into force on 3 January 2008. To import a vehicle into New Zealand, it must meet the requirements set out in Infosheet 2.08, to which this document is linked.
31 October 2006 Revision 10 This revision to the infosheet informs you that standards for heavy-vehicle brakes will be introduced through the Heavy-vehicle Brakes Rule, which comes into force on 1 March 2007. These heavy-vehicle brakes requirements will apply to imported heavy vehicles that are first registered in New Zealand after 1 July 2008. Detail is provided in the infosheets to which this document links.

This infosheet provides links and background information about importing motor vehicles into New Zealand. It links to five separate infosheets (2.10, 2.11, 2.12, 2.13 and 2.14) and the reader selects the infosheets that are relevant to them (depending on the country from which the vehicle is being imported). These infosheets have been updated to include heavy vehicles (gross vehicle mass greater than 3,500 kg).

15 December 2003 Revision 8 Infosheet 1.67 has been restructured. The information previously in five sections of Infosheet 1.67 (1.67a, 1.67b, 1.67c. 1,67d, 1.67e) is now presented in five separate infosheets (2.10, 2.11, 2.12, 2.13, 2.14) according to the country from which the light vehicle is being imported. Infosheet 1.67 revision 8 also provides links to other relevant information.
30 July 2003 Revision 7.2 The layout and wording of the Statement of Compliance have been revised.
20 November 2002 Revision 7.1 Spelling error corrected in Importing light vehicles from Australia section.
4 November 2002 Revision 7.1 Contact details for obtaining a Statement of Compliance are now more obvious in the text that is headed "What is a Statement of Compliance". Reference to the LTSA email address has also been removed.
