Road code gets 'makeover' at 70

The official New Zealand road code has been essential reading for Kiwi drivers since it first appeared as a slim pamphlet in 1937. Seventy years and well over a million copies later, the road code has undergone a major makeover, with the latest version hitting the shelves of bookstores and licensing agents around New Zealand this week.

Formerly printed in a large magazine size format, the road code has been streamlined to fit conveniently into a glove box or handbag, which Land Transport New Zealand hopes will encourage drivers to keep it on hand and refer to it more frequently.

The publication has also been split into two volumes – The official New Zealand road code and the Licence and study guide, which contains driver licensing information and theory test questions. The new format makes it easier for learner drivers to refer to the road rules when studying for their driving test. The two volumes are sold together in a handy plastic wallet for $24.90.

The overall structure of both volumes has also been redesigned to improve ease of use. Content and images have also been revised and updated where necessary. The road code section of the Land Transport New Zealand website (www.landtransport.govt.nz/roadcode) has also been redeveloped to reflect these changes and make it easier to navigate.

Similarly-updated versions of the heavy vehicle and motorcycle road codes will be released later this year.

The official New Zealand road code - Questions & answers

How much will the new Road code cost?

There is no price increase – the recommended retail price is $24.90 (rounded down five cents from the previous version).

If I lose one volume can I buy a replacement?

No, the two volumes are sold together in a handy plastic wallet – you cannot purchase them separately. However you can now view the entire content of both publications on the Land Transport NZ website.

How has the Road code changed from before?

The format has been reduced to make it more convenient and portable e.g. to fit into glovebox or handbag. Formerly the Road code was one volume and those studying for their learner test had to flick back and forth from testing information to answers. Now the driver licensing and theory test-related information has been separated into a study guide for easier reference. The two volumes are sold as one publication in a handy plastic wallet. Content has also been updated and restructured for ease of reference.

Where can I buy a copy of the new Road code?

You can buy a copy of the new-look Road code at driver licensing agents such as NZAA and selected bookstores.

I have a previous version of the Road code which I’ve been using to study for my test - do I need to buy the latest version?

It’s always a good idea to check the latest version as any new Rules and requirements will be included. However you can check the Road code content on the Land Transport NZ website for any changes or updates.

Who should I contact if I have any questions or comments about the Road code?
