Funding has been approved for construction of the Mangatawhiri Deviation - a 7.2km realignment of SH2 bypassing Mangatawhiri township in the Waikato.
The Mangatawhiri Deviation is a key part of Transit New Zealand’s long term strategy to provide a high standard four-lane expressway on SH2 between Pokeno (SH1) and Mangatarata (SH27).
The Land Transport New Zealand Board approved $45.9 million for construction of the project at its meeting yesterday.
The project entails the construction of a two lane highway at the western end and a four lane section at the eastern end providing passing opportunities in each direction. New underpasses will be provided where the deviation crosses local roads, reducing delays and improving safety. The existing section of SH2 is to be retained as a local road providing access to Mangatawhiri township, and as the preferred route for cyclists.
Board chair Dr Jan Wright says the deviation will reduce crashes and cut travel times, benefiting users of SH2 and local roads in the area.
