Go-ahead for Northwestern Motorway auxiliary lane

Funding for the design and construction of an additional westbound lane on the Northwestern Motorway from the Newton Road on-ramp to the Western Springs off-ramp has been approved by Land Transport New Zealand.

The Land Transport New Zealand Board has agreed to fund Transit New Zealand to carry out the project at an estimated total cost of $8.75 million. The project comprises the addition of a fourth lane to the 1.2km stretch of motorway, as well as an adjacent shoulder to act as a bus priority lane and associated safety works.

Board chair Dr Jan Wright says the additional lane and shoulder will reduce congestion and crash rates, improving the safety and efficiency of the motorway.

Barriers are being built and other noise reduction works will be implemented to mitigate the potential for increased traffic noise resulting from the project.
