Draft Guidelines for facilities that assist blind and vision impaired pedestrians (RTS 14)

Please note: consultation closed on 18 January 2008

The purpose of the RTS 14 guidelines is to provide the best practice design and installation principles for pedestrian facilities that assist blind and vision-impaired people. Standardising pedestrian facilities will give consistent directional and warning messages to blind and vision-impaired people, as well as increasing their safety while crossing roads and throughout the entire walking journey.

This is the second revision of RTS 14 (the guidelines were also revised in 2003). This revision:

  • clarifies matters that were less clear in previous editions
  • amends some requirements in a minor way
  • advises on using staggered arrangements of tactile warning indicators
  • removes some general advice which is to be included in the Pedestrian Planning and Design Guide.

The deadline for submissions has been extended until 18 January 2008.
