DRAFT Level crossings guideline

Consultation closed on 16 November 2007

Comments are now sought on a draft Level crossings guideline, which is the second manual being prepared for the new Manual for traffic control devices. Based on existing policies the Level crossings guideline will provide practitioners with insights into the requirements of both rail and road when they meet at level crossings.

The Level Crossing Working Group overseeing the guideline includes representatives of ONTRACK, Toll NZ, Federation of Rail Organisations of NZ, local government, Transit NZ, Ministry of Transport as well as Land Transport NZ.

The new Manual for traffic control devices is being developed to provide guidance and standards for using traffic control devices to manage traffic networks. It will replace many existing New Zealand-based resources, in particular the Manual of Traffic Signs and Markings. The manual will complement the Austroads series of guidelines (under preparation) by providing detailed or specific New Zealand practices not included in those documents.

Development of the manual is being managed by a steering group including representatives of Land Transport NZ, Transit NZ, local government and the traffic sign and road marking industries.  Each of the 16 planned volumes making up the manual will be developed by a working group of practitioners with experience and interest in the specific subject matter.

To ensure industry needs are met, we are now seeking comment on the draft. Feedback received will inform the development of the guideline.

Please advise your members, colleagues or other potentially interested organisations or individuals about the opportunity to comment.
